Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The best place for our newest and smallest

Cohen Children's Medical Center has added 5,900 square feet of space to our current 44-bed NICU, adding 24 new beds for high-risk newborns, making this 68 bed unit one of the largest in the nation. The expanded NICU is a spacious, friendly environment allowing family members to spend time together. The new beds use state-of-the-art, fully computerized monitoring equipment.

Occasionally a baby has difficulty making his or her transition into the world. A low birth weight or certain medical conditions necessitate moving the baby to our newly enhanced NICU, where he or she will be cared for by a team of neonatal specialists using the most advanced monitoring equipment to oversee their tiny patients on a moment-to-moment basis. We even provide music therapy specialists, as music has been proven to calm even the smallest and sickest babies. And many local hospitals don't have a NICU or support personnel, so babies are transported to Cohen Children's Medical Center in our specialized incubator and ambulance.

As a premier children's hospital in the region, the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center NICU serves a huge population on Long Island and beyond, including Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties. The New York State Department of Health has designated our Obstetrical and Neonatal Services as Regional Perinatal Centers, for referral of the most complex patient problems as well as the oversight of quality care for the newborns in our region.
